Our Partners
carry me back is a collaboration among various local stakeholders who are involved in different stages of the waste cycle, working together to close the loop
SPCC is the local partner implementing the ‘carry me back’ program, and is dedicated to collect, shred, package and distribute the carry me back bags.
SPCC is a community-based NGO established by the local Sherpa people of Khumbu and has been the lead organization managing waste in the region for over three decades.
SPCC has partnered with Sagarmatha Next and BW2V to develop better solutions for waste management in the area. The three organizations have conducted field research to assess the situation and propose alternatives for managing waste on-site, as well as transporting it to Kathmandu in an affordable manner. As a result, the ‘carry me back’ initiative was proposed and piloted as their first joint project.
Sagarmatha Next is the creator of the ‘carry me back’ concept.
Located in Syangboche, above Namche Bazar and en route to Everest Base Camp, Sagarmatha Next aims to change perceptions around waste and provide support to local stakeholders in the region by offering innovative and sustainable solutions for solid waste management in the Khumbu region.
By highlighting art and innovation, and providing a Waste Lab where local and international artists can transform waste into artwork and design products, Sagarmatha Next strives to address the issue of waste. Additionally, it offers a space for locals and visitors to learn about the mountains, the environment, local culture, socio-cultural challenges, and waste management in the region.
BW2V is the local recycling partner in charge of collecting the ‘carry me back’ bags from TIA Airport in Kathmandu and proceeding with the recovery and recycling practices
BW2V is a social enterprise dedicated to creating value from waste. Since its establishment in 2014, the company has developed an integrated solid waste management system supported by robust technology software to help companies and communities responsibly manage, reduce, and track their waste.
BW2V received the waste collected through the ‘carry me back’ initiative to segregate it and send it to various recycling companies.
moware is the local partner upcycling the plastic bottle caps into the ‘From the Himalayas’ products of Sagarmatha Next
moware is a product design studio that uses waste as a raw material to create meaningful products. All of their products are carefully handcrafted by a women-led team at their waste lab located in the Kathmandu Valley.
moware crafts the souvenirs made from HDPE bottle caps collected from the Khumbu region for Sagarmatha Next. They also designed and produced the first 1,000 ‘carry me back’ bags used for the pilot project, and have documented the production process in a manual and video for replication at other locations.
HLF is the recycling partner recycling the bottle caps into high quality rPET pellets.
HLF is a social enterprise dedicated to PET bottle recycling in Nepal, pioneering the production of the highest quality food-grade rPET pellets. Since its establishment in 2012, it has recycled an impressive 40 million bottles annually.
PET bottles collected through the ‘carry me back’ initiative are sent to HLF to be recycled into new raw materials that can be integrated into the production chain.
